Tips for storing clothes

Whether you want to store your seasonal clothes or clothes you don’t wear very often – for example, in the loft or in a storage unit – it’s important to bear a few things in mind to keep your clothes in good condition. Here are six tips for storing clothes.

1. Wash your clothes before storing them

It’s important to wash your clothes before putting them away. Even if they look clean, there may still be traces of sweat, dirt or perfume on them that attract moths. So, to ensure your clothes stay in top condition and pests are kept at bay, it’s vital to wash them thoroughly before putting them away. Because let’s be honest, nobody wants to find their clothes damaged or contaminated when they take them out of their storage unit. So don’t take any risks – wash your clothes before putting them away.

2. Don’t use plastic bags or cardboard boxes

Using plastic bags and cardboard boxes to store clothes isn’t the best option. Plastic bags can suffocate the fabrics and restrict airflow, causing your clothes to start to smell. Cardboard boxes can trap moisture and cause mould, especially if stored in damp environments. Use breathable garment bags or vacuum bags specifically designed for storing your clothes. That way, you can be sure your clothes will remain safe and odour-free.

3. Vacuum bags

Vacuum bags are the perfect solution for creating more space when storing your clothes. The bags are designed to suck out the air, compressing the clothes so they take up less space. Please note that some fabrics, such as wool or cashmere, can shrink if stored too tightly. So use the bags with care and avoid damaging your favourite garments.

4. Mothballs

Moths are a common problem when storing clothes. Fortunately, you can use mothballs. These small balls are impregnated with chemicals that repel moths and keep your clothes moth-free. Please note: the chemicals can be potentially harmful to people and pets, so keep them in a safe place and ensure there is adequate ventilation.

5. Store in a clean, cool, dark and dry place

It’s important to store your clothes in a clean, cool, dark and dry place. Dirt and damp can cause mould and mildew, whilst light can cause the colours of your clothes to fade. You should therefore store your clothes in a clean, dry place away from direct sunlight. Storage Share offers storage units that are dry, clean and dark, which is ideal for storing your clothes.

6. Checking your belongings

Whether you store your clothes at home or in an external storage unit, it’s important to check them regularly. Damaged items are the last thing you want. That’s why it’s a good idea to inspect your stored belongings at least a few times a year. This way, you can be sure your belongings remain in top condition and you’ll avoid any unwanted surprises.
