Whether you’re moving house, renovating your home or simply want to store your mattress and bedding in a storage unit, it’s important to pack them properly to prevent damage. In this blog, we’ll give you some practical tips on how to pack your mattress and bedding safely and efficiently.

Packing a mattress

Moving or storing a mattress without protection can lead to dirt, damp and damage. That’s why using a mattress cover or moving cover is important to keep your mattress clean and in good condition during transport and storage.

Packing a mattress requires due attention and care. Below, we’ve put together the best steps for packing your mattress properly.

1. Choose the right packing materials

There are various types of packing materials available, such as cardboard, plastic and removal blankets, but for a mattress, it’s best to use only plastic. To keep the mattress dust-free for a longer period, sturdy mattress covers with a zip are a good option. If you only want to store the mattress for a short time, use a plastic bag. Use the plastic bag the mattress came in. It’s big enough and sturdy.

2. Clean and dry the mattress before packing it

Make sure your mattress is clean and dry before you start packing it away. Remove all bedding and vacuum the mattress to remove dust and dirt. If you’re going to store the mattress, it’s important that it’s dry to prevent mould from forming.

3. Store the mattress correctly

Never store an innerspring mattress on its side; always store it flat. Rolling up this type of mattress is also not a good idea. A cold foam mattress, however, can be stored on its side or rolled up. Try to fold the mattress in half as little as possible. Folding any type of mattress in half is not recommended.

Why a mattress cover is essential when moving house

A mattress cover protects your mattress from dust, dirt and moisture whilst moving house. Plastic mattress covers are particularly popular because they are water-repellent and completely seal in your mattress.

Storing a mattress: what should you bear in mind?

Are you going to store your mattress temporarily? If so, make sure it is well protected with a cover and kept in a dry place. A storage unit is ideal for keeping your mattress safe and clean.

  • Use a protective cover.
  • Ensure the environment is dry.
  • Ideally, store the mattress flat.
  • Avoid damp and temperature fluctuations.

Packing bedding

Packing bed linen is an important part of storing or transporting your bedding. Below, we’ve listed the best steps for you to follow to pack your bed linen correctly.

1. Wash and dry the bed linen before packing it

Before packing your bed linen, you should wash it and leave it to dry completely. This will prevent stains or unpleasant odours from lingering in the bed linen. Do make sure the bed linen is completely dry before packing it away, to prevent mould or bacteria from developing during storage.

2. Use airtight or vacuum bags

If you want to save space, you can put the bed linen in airtight or vacuum bags. This way, the bed linen takes up less space and stays clean and dry during transport or storage. If you don’t have any vacuum bags to hand, place the bed linen in a cotton storage bag or cover to protect it from dust and dirt. Cotton is breathable and prevents mould from forming.

3. Store the bed linen correctly

Store your bed linen in a dry, cool place and ensure it is not exposed to damp or direct sunlight. Storage Share offers storage units that are dry, cool and dark, which is ideal for storing your bed linen.

By choosing the right packing materials, ensuring your items are clean and dry before packing them, and storing them correctly, your mattress and bed linen will remain in good condition whilst packed away.

What sort of moving cover do you need for your mattress?

A sturdy moving cover is usually used when moving a mattress. These covers are specially designed to protect your mattress during transport and often fit standard sizes such as 90x200 perfectly.

Where can you buy a mattress cover?

Mattress covers are available from removal shops and online. When choosing a cover, make sure it’s the right size and sturdy enough to ensure your mattress is properly protected.

Is a plastic mattress cover any good?

Yes, it offers good protection against moisture and dirt.
